Võru, Estonia

Võru is the regional center for the deep southeastern corner of Estonia. There's a bus station and there are enough stores and hotels to support visitors, many of whom come to see such nearby sites as Suur Munamägi, the highest point in the Baltic states.

The antique store in Võru claims to be the largest in Estonia. Consisting of three buildings set around a courtyard, you'll find everything old Estonian from spinning wheel spools to millstones.

Dr. Friedrich R. Kreutzwald
is the father of Estonian
literature.

More important historically, Võru was the home of Dr. Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald (1803-1882). Dr. Kreutzwald was a physician who cared for the town's inhabitants. In his spare time he collected and wrote the great Estonian epic poem, Kalevipoeg. With its publication, he became the father of Estonian letters, launching a national literature and giving birth to an increased spirit of nationalism. There's a park in his honor with a statue of him and there's a museum. One of the main streets in town is named for him as well.
